Kitchen ki life ka 50% decision carcass material par hota hai. Shutter visible hota hai, but carcass — woh hidden hero hai. Dealers shutter ka pricing pe focus karte hain. Hum factory pe carcass ka grade focus karte hain — kyunki yahi failure-prone part hai 5-7 saal mein.
Yahaan BWP plywood aur HDHMR ka honest comparison hai, with factory-floor experience of building 2000+ kitchens.
Quick Verdict
- Budget kitchen + standard humidity → BWP plywood (ISI 710 grade)
- Premium acrylic / PU shutters → HDHMR (smoother edge bonding)
- Coastal city / very humid zones → Marine plywood (better than both)
- Budget shoestring → Avoid HDF / MDF except for dry-zone wardrobes
What is BWP plywood?
BWP = Boiling Water Proof. Plywood made with phenolic resin adhesive that holds even when submerged in boiling water. ISI 710 is the Indian standard grade that should be marked on the sheet. Made by Centuryply, Greenply, Kitply, Sharon, etc.
Structure: 7-11 alternating cross-grain veneer layers pressed under high heat. Each layer is ~2mm hardwood. 18mm and 19mm thicknesses are kitchen standard.
What is HDHMR?
HDHMR = High Density High Moisture Resistant board. It's an engineered wood product — essentially compressed wood fibers + resin pressed into a uniform-density board. Made by Action Tesa (most common), Century, Greenply.
Structure: No layers — single homogeneous density throughout. Smoother surface, better for premium finishes.
Side-by-side comparison
| Factor | BWP Plywood ISI 710 | HDHMR |
|---|---|---|
| Price (18mm sheet) | ₹70-95/sqft | ₹85-120/sqft |
| Density | 650-700 kg/m³ | 800+ kg/m³ |
| Edge appearance | Layer-pattern visible | Smooth, uniform |
| Screw holding | Excellent (cross-grain) | Very good |
| Moisture resistance | Excellent (BWP grade) | Good — not boiling-water |
| Workability | Standard tools | Standard tools, smoother cuts |
| Edge banding finish | Visible glue line | Cleaner, seamless |
| Suitability for acrylic | Acceptable | Excellent |
| Suitability for PU spray | Acceptable with surface prep | Excellent — no prep needed |
| Suitability for laminate | Excellent | Excellent |
| Warranty (factory) | 10 years | 10 years |
Where each wins in real-world use
BWP Plywood wins for:
- High moisture exposure — bottom cabinets near sink, garbage area, dishwasher zone
- Heavy load cabinets — pantry shelves holding 30+ kg of dal, atta
- Repairs / re-screwing — original screw holes hold better than HDHMR
- 15+ year horizon — natural wood structure outlasts engineered fiber
HDHMR wins for:
- Acrylic shutters — smoother substrate = better acrylic adhesion
- PU spray finish — uniform surface accepts spray better
- Curved cuts — CNC machines cut HDHMR more cleanly
- Mid-tier budget — premium look at slightly-higher cost
The hybrid approach we recommend
At our factory, the most-picked tier (Premium) actually uses both:
"HDHMR carcass + BWP plywood shutters" — best of both worlds.
Why: shutters are exposed (need BWP moisture resistance), carcass is internal (HDHMR's smoother edge banding looks more premium on visible faces).
What about marine plywood?
Marine plywood is one step above BWP — uses higher-grade phenolic resin and stricter manufacturing standards. Originally designed for boats. Costs ₹130-200/sqft vs BWP's ₹70-95.
When to choose marine: coastal cities (Mumbai, Chennai, Goa), houses near rivers, ground-floor apartments with damp walls, 20+ year horizon. For 90% of Greater Noida customers, BWP is enough.
What about MDF and HDF?
MDF (Medium Density Fiberboard) and HDF (High Density Fiberboard) are the cheaper engineered woods. Acceptable for:
- Dry-zone wardrobes (away from bathrooms)
- Office furniture
- TV units
NOT acceptable for kitchens. Period. Even if dealer claims "moisture resistant MDF", it's not BWP-grade. We've seen 4-year-old MDF kitchens with swollen, peeling, blackened bottoms.
Pricing impact on full kitchen
| Carcass Choice | 70-sqft L-shape kitchen total |
|---|---|
| BWP Plywood + laminate (Essential) | ~₹80,500 |
| HDHMR + BWP shutters + acrylic (Premium) | ~₹1,29,500 |
| Marine + PU (Signature) | ~₹1,96,000 |
Common dealer trickeries to watch
- "BWP-equivalent" — Not a real grade. Either BWP or not.
- "Moisture-treated MDF" — Still MDF. Don't buy.
- "Imported Vietnamese ply" — Often not ISI-marked. Better to stick to Indian BWP brands you can verify.
- Mixed carcass — Some cabinets BWP, some MDF. Always ask: "Pura kitchen BWP hai?" Get it in writing on the quote.
Final recommendation
For a Greater Noida modular kitchen, this is the optimal carcass-shutter combination per tier:
- Essential: BWP plywood carcass + BWP shutters with laminate finish.
- Premium: HDHMR carcass + BWP plywood shutters with acrylic or PU.
- Signature: Marine plywood carcass + HDHMR shutters with PU/lacquered glass.
