Most people choosing a modular kitchen spend weeks on the shutter colour and about five minutes on the hardware. That is backwards. The colour is what you see on day one; the hinges, drawer channels and lift-ups are what you feel every single day for the next ten-plus years. A kitchen with a beautiful acrylic finish and cheap channels will start sagging and banging long before the finish shows any age.
We build kitchens in our own factory at Bindal Enclave, Kasna Road, Greater Noida, and we fit hardware from Hettich, Hafele, Blum, Ebco and Aristo every week. This guide is the honest version of what we tell customers at the factory table: what each part does, how the brands differ, where it is worth spending and where it is not.
The five pieces of hardware that decide how your kitchen feels
1. Hinges
Every swing shutter hangs on concealed (cup) hinges, usually two per shutter, three or more on tall pantry doors. What to check:
- Soft-close: either built into the hinge or added as a separate damper. Built-in is cleaner and more consistent.
- 3-way adjustment: good hinges let the fitter adjust the shutter up-down, left-right and in-out with a screwdriver. This is how shutter gaps are kept straight after the house settles.
- Opening angle: normal hinges open around 110°; corner and pull-out cabinets often need wider-angle or special hinges so the shutter clears the internal basket.
- Clip-on mounting: the shutter can be removed and refitted without unscrewing anything — useful for cleaning and future repairs.
2. Drawer channels (runners)
This is where the biggest quality gap sits. There are three broad grades:
- Roller (wheel) channels — the basic white powder-coated rails with a nylon wheel. Cheap, but they do not extend fully, they rattle, and they wear out under a heavy steel-utensil load. We do not recommend them for kitchen drawers.
- Telescopic ball-bearing channels — full extension, smoother, decent load capacity. A reasonable middle option, especially with a soft-close version.
- Concealed under-mount channels and tandem/box systems — the runner sits under the drawer, hidden, with built-in soft-close and a higher load rating. This is what gives a modular kitchen drawer that heavy, silent, "expensive" glide. Hettich's InnoTech-type drawer systems and Blum's Tandembox are examples of this category.
3. Tandem baskets and pull-outs
Indian kitchens store a lot of heavy steel — kadhais, cookers, thalis, katoris. Tandem baskets (a wire or box basket on a concealed, full-extension soft-close runner) are the workhorse of an Indian modular kitchen. Bottle pull-outs, grain trolleys, wicker baskets and dustbin holders all sit on similar mechanisms. On our kitchen price calculator these are priced per piece — for example a tandem/Innotech basket is listed at ₹3,000 each and a bottle pull-out at ₹3,500 each — so you only pay for the ones you actually use.
4. Lift-up systems for wall cabinets
Instead of a side-hinged shutter, a lift-up opens upward and stays at any height. It is the single most useful upgrade for wall cabinets above a hob or sink, because you are not ducking a swinging door. Gas-strut "hydraulic lifts" are the economical version (listed on our calculator at ₹1,000 each); premium mechanical lift systems such as Blum's Aventos family cost more but hold position more precisely and last longer.
5. Corner solutions
Every L-shaped and U-shaped kitchen has a blind corner. A magic corner (the swing-out unit that pulls corner baskets into reach) turns dead space into usable storage. It is one of the costlier fittings — ₹16,000 on our calculator — so decide based on how much you really store. In a small L-kitchen, a simple corner shelf may be enough.
Brand by brand: what you are actually paying for
All four big names below make good hardware. The differences are in range, finish, feel and price — not in "works vs breaks". What matters more than the logo is that it is the original product, fitted correctly.
| Brand | Origin | Known for | Where it fits best |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hettich | Germany | Hinges, drawer systems, wide range in India | Our default for most kitchens — strong value and easy service availability |
| Hafele | Germany | Very wide catalogue: fittings, handles, organisers, accessories | When you want specific accessories, handles or organiser inserts from one source |
| Blum | Austria | Premium lift-up systems, box drawers, motion technology | Premium kitchens where lift-ups and drawers are the priority |
| Ebco | India | Practical channels, hinges and fittings | Budget-conscious projects, secondary storage, utility areas |
| Aristo | India | Wardrobe sliding systems and profiles | Sliding wardrobes more than kitchens |
On our calculator, the fittings-brand choice changes the cabinet rate directly: Hettich adds ₹150/sq.ft and Roots German / Century adds ₹115/sq.ft. That ₹35/sq.ft gap on a 77 sq.ft example kitchen works out to ₹2,695 — small compared with the total, which is why we usually advise people not to downgrade hardware to save money. Save on the finish if you must; do not save on the moving parts. If you want Hafele, Blum or Ebco specifically, tell us at the site visit and it is quoted line by line.
Fake and "type" hardware: the real risk in the market
The biggest hardware problem we see in Greater Noida is not a bad brand — it is a fake one. "Hettich-type" or "German-type" channels look similar in a showroom but use thinner steel, weaker dampers and poor bearings. Within a year or two drawers drop, soft-close stops working and shutters go out of line.
How to protect yourself:
- Ask for brand names in the written quote — not "branded hardware", but the brand and product type for hinges, channels and baskets.
- Look for the brand stamp on hinge cups and runner rails when the kitchen is installed. Original hardware is marked.
- Ask for brand warranty cards at handover. We hand over the cabinet warranty card plus the hardware brand warranty cards for exactly this reason.
- Be wary of very low "all-inclusive" prices that do not mention hardware at all. Hardware is the easiest place to quietly cut cost.
Matching hardware to the cabinet
Good hardware needs a good board to hold the screws. Hinges and heavy tandem baskets put real load on the carcass sides. HDHMR and good-grade plywood both hold screws well when the holes are drilled correctly — read our BWP plywood vs HDHMR comparison for how each board behaves. The other half is precision: in our factory, hinge and channel holes are drilled and the hardware is mounted before dispatch, and drawer alignment, shutter balance and soft-close action are test-fitted in QC. On site, the team only assembles and aligns. Hardware fitted on site with a hand drill is the most common reason for crooked shutters.
Greater Noida conditions: humidity, dust and care
Our monsoon months are humid and the rest of the year is dusty, especially in new sectors and Greater Noida West towers where construction is still going on around you. A few habits keep hardware working for years:
- Wipe the sink-side cabinets dry; standing water around hinge cups and the base of channels causes rust and swelling over time.
- Do not overload a single drawer far beyond its rating — spread heavy cookware across tandem baskets.
- Vacuum or wipe dust from runner tracks every few months; grit is what makes a smooth runner feel rough.
- If a shutter drifts out of line, it is usually a two-minute hinge adjustment, not a repair. Ask us to show you at handover.
Our older modular kitchen maintenance tips post covers daily cleaning in more detail.
Our honest recommendation
- Everyday family kitchen: Hettich hinges and soft-close channels throughout, tandem baskets for the heavy-utensil drawers, gas-strut lifts on wall units.
- Premium kitchen: add premium lift-up systems on wall units and box drawers for the cooking zone; consider a magic corner only if the corner is genuinely used.
- Tight budget: keep original branded hinges and channels, reduce the number of accessories, and choose a simpler laminate finish instead of acrylic. Accessories can be added later; poor channels cannot be fixed later without replacing them.
